Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is based on Scripture, Tradition and Church teaching, as given by popes, bishops and theologians. It offers a set of principles to help us think about how we should interact with others. It forms the foundation of the choices we make, and how we view creation.

‘Dear young people… The Lord wants to turn your hands, my hands, our hands, into signs of reconciliation, of communion, of creation. He wants your hands to continue building the world of today.’ Pope Francis

Our faith calls us to love God and to love our neighbours in every situation, especially our sisters and brothers living in poverty. Following in the footsteps of Christ, we hope to make present in our unjust and broken world, the justice, love and peace of God.

This Half term our focus is: Family and Community

Family and Community is a central principle of Catholic Social Teaching (CST).

What is Family and Community in CST?

Family and Community are super important parts of Catholic Social Teaching. They help us understand how we should treat each other and live together in love and peace.

  • Family is the first place where we learn how to love, share, and care for others.
  • Community means all the people around us—our friends, neighbors, classmates, teachers, and even people we don’t know yet!

Why is it Important?

God made us to live with others, not just by ourselves. Families and communities help us grow, feel safe, and learn how to be kind and helpful.

  • When families are strong, children feel loved and supported.
  • When communities work together, everyone can have what they need—like food, homes, schools, and friendship.

🙌 How Can We Show It?

We can show love for family and community in lots of ways:

  • Be kind to your family members, even when it’s hard.
  • Help others—like sharing toys, helping clean up, or cheering someone up.
  • Include everyone—don’t leave people out, even if they’re different from you.
  • Pray for your family, your school, and your neighborhood.
