Lent - March and April

What is Lent?

Lent is the period of six weeks (40 days not including Sundays) leading up to Easter, the most important festival in the Catholic calendar.

Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. The last week of Lent is called Holy Week.

When is Lent?

Lent begins on Wednesday 5 March and ends on Thursday 17 April 2025.

What colour do we have for Lent?

In the Churches you will see the colour purple. Purple is traditionally the colour linked with royalty and suffering, making it an appropriate choice for Lent. It reminds us of Christ's passion and His suffering and Resurrection. In Lent, purple also symbolises saying sorry and starting again.

We have purple cloths, on our prayer corner. The pictures below show the cloths being blessed during Ash Wednesday Mass.

Ash Wednesday

On Ash Wednesday St James went to  church where we held  a service during which we were marked on the forehead with a cross of ashes.

This is a sign of saying sorry to God for any wrong-doing.

The pictures show us having the ashes blessed before they went on our heads.

Ashes and Purple Cloth's being blessed.
