Safeguarding and Child Protection

St James’ Catholic Primary School recognises its obligation to promote the safeguarding and welfare of children.  This is reflected in our policies and our whole school ethos, it is linked into how we recruit staff, maintain our building and site, the health and safety of our pupils, visitor management and all school trips.

As a school we believe that it is always unacceptable for a child to experience abuse of any kind.   Safeguarding and Child protection is the responsibility of all school staff.

We will provide staff and volunteers with guidance to follow when they suspect a child may be experiencing abuse or at risk of harm. We will work co-operatively with other agencies to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with parents/carers first - unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

Designated Senior Lead(s) for Child Protection:

Head Teacher : Mrs Angela Backen
Deputy Headteacher: Mr Matthew Ingram

SENCo: Mrs Michelle Simpson
Chair of Local Academy Committee : Mrs Tracy Gibbs
Nominated Academy Committee Representative : Mr Roger Billington

Local authorities and the governing bodies of all schools and colleges have a statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children (Education Act 2002 s.157 and 175). Child Protection comes within the framework of ‘safeguarding children’. The school has a statutory duty under the Education Act 2002 to pass on any child protection concerns.

If a concern should be brought to our attention, in most cases we will discuss this with parents/carers, as our aim is always to work together to promote the welfare of our pupils.

However there may be occasions when, having taken advice, we are required by law to make a child protection referral without first consulting parents/carers. Our Safeguarding Policy is available to view on this website and a copy is held in the school office.

We will review our policy and procedures on an annual basis
